Carrollton Courthouse Call for Artwork

Overview

The Carrollton Courthouse building is an architectural gem of New Orleans. After serving as a school for over a century, it has stood empty since 2013. Felicity Property Co and Liberty Senior Living have partnered together to revitalize the building as a senior living community. Arts New Orleans is supporting their efforts by curating an art collection featuring the works of local and regional artists. We hope to create a sense of place within the historic building, to use artwork to tell the stories of the historic building and neighborhood, and to create a peaceful yet vibrant environment for the future residents.

The total budget for artwork is $60,000. Approximately 25-30 artworks will be purchased, ranging from $500-$10,000 (with most artwork purchases in the range of $500-$3,000).

Artwork Themes

The Carrollton Courthouse was designed by acclaimed architect Henry Howard and originally constructed in 1855. It has a storied history as a former courthouse and school. To bring the walls to life for its future residents, we encourage artists to submit works of art responding to a variety of themes, including but not limited to:

• Peacefulness & Wellbeing: Artwork that gives a sense of peace and wellbeing to seniors, including abstract works
• Nature: Artwork that shows the city’s connection to our natural landscape, including the Mississippi River, Lake Pontchartrain, bayous and swamps
• History: Artwork that speaks to historic events that took place on the site and to the history of the building as a former courthouse and school. To learn more, visit New Orleans Historical, a project by The Midlo Center for New Orleans Studies at the University of New Orleans
• Neighborhood: Scenes of Uptown, Carrollton area, and Audubon Park
• Culture: Artwork that speaks to the vibrancy of New Orleans music, cuisine, and cultural traditions
• Architecture: Artwork inspired by the Carrollton Courthouse and other iconic New Orleans architecture

Artists are encouraged to submit any inspiring artwork that will add to the beauty, elegance and character of the building.

Artwork Submission Requirements

1. Artists may submit existing works of art or they may apply for a commission to create a new work of art in a particular style. Artists may submit up to three existing works of art and/or one concept for a commission. The submissions can be in any budget category. Artists are encouraged to submit a variety of sizes and prices.
2. Accepted media includes, but is not limited to: painting, drawing, watercolor, photography, fine art illustration, mixed-media, and printmaking. Sculptures will be accepted if they are able to be wall-mounted.
3. All artwork must be framed (if applicable) and ready to hang by wire or d-rings. Artists are responsible for getting their work framed.

Selection Process & Timeline

1. The deadline to submit is September 30.
2. Artwork will be reviewed online by a selection committee and include representatives from Felicity Property Co., Liberty Senior Living, and the architects and interior designers of the remodeled Carrollton Courthouse.
3. Artists will be notified by email by October 14th which pieces have been selected.
4. Artists must deliver artwork the week of November 14th. Payments will be made to artists upon delivery.

Funding

The total budget for artwork is $60,000. Artwork will be purchased at $500, $750, $1,000, $1,500, $2,000, $2,500, $5,000, $7,500, or $10,000 levels. Approximately 25-30 artworks will be purchased, with most artwork purchases in the range of $500-$3,000.

How to Apply

Artists must complete an online application using Arts New Orleans’ Submittable platform. For every work of art submitted, we will ask you to provide information about the artwork, a brief description, a high-resolution jpeg image, and the price of the artwork.

For new commissions, we will ask you to provide example images, a brief description, and your proposed price.
