Krewe of Carrollton
This parading club was founded in 1924 and is named after the uptown neighborhood of Carrollton – once a small township located on the edge of Orleans and Jefferson Parishes. The group started as the Seventh District Carnival and Social Club and began staging the annual “Carrollton Carnival” on Fat Tuesday.
Carrollton has a long-standing tradition of rolling exactly at its designated time. The krewe made a lasting place for itself in 1933 when, due to the wettest season on record Carrollton was the only daytime parade for the year, but a devastating den fire and the outbreak of World War II seemingly killed the krewe in 1942. However, in 1947, the surviving members reunited and resumed their place in the Mardi Gras lineup.
Lead by its 4th Captain since 1947, the Krewe of Carrollton parades today on the second Sunday before Mardi Gras Day. Its membership is over 350 strong, owning and parading its own floats and Den. Although the route has changed over the years from a neighbor hood event in the Carrollton section of town, to the Mid City section of town, to its current traditional Uptown New Orleans route along St Charles Ave to Canal Street, the Krewe has maintained its identity and its image of being a Family Parade.
