Born in 1988, Rachel June is a local photographer quickly gaining recognition and support for her photography. She is currently collaborating with internationally recognized painter Ken Vrana in his new portrait series entitled “The Invisible People.” Ms. June, additionally is the in-house photographer for 3 Ring Circus, The Big Top, documenting their monthly graffiti competition, “Secret Walls.”
Ms. June first exhibited at Mid-City Theatre during their gallery show featuring local woman artists, entitled “Femme Fest.” The day of the opening reception, Ms. June was invited to produce a solo show at the request of director, Fred Nuccio, who noticed the attention her photograph received.
Evil Pleasures features seven photographs that are allegories of the 7 Deadly Sins. Portrayed by Ms. June, each photograph is the final moment of the process involved in portraying these historical and cultural ideas. Possessed by lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy, & pride Ms. June wore the masks and surrounded herself with the objects necessary to surface these demons that lurk within the human flesh.
The other fifteen photographs are portraits and documents of Ms. June’s personal life. From the stillness of the Mississippi river on an overcast day, to punk shows and her sink, Ms. June’s photographs are tonal documents capturing the emotional range of quiet contemplation all the way to chaos.
