What is Butoh?
Butoh began in 1959 Japan through the work of Tatsumi Hijikata and then Kazuo Ohno. It is rooted in performance art, yet it evades definition. It is a sway between Life and Death. It is creation, rising out of the darkness with each breath. It is a raw expression of Spirit in flesh, transcending traditional ideas of beauty.
About the Facilitator:
Odile’s BUTOH exploration began with Wicked Cricket Dance Theatre in 2001. This marked the beginning of her integration of Butoh dance, Physical Theatre practice and Eastern contemplative studies. After clearly meeting the voices of her Ancestors through the dance, she was drawn to the Subbody Butoh School in the Himalayas. There she learned, performed, and taught most of 2010, culminating in the first Himalayan Butoh Festival. In February 2011, she began to hold space for ‘Ancestral Whispers’ in New Orleans. She looks forward to being a midwife to the emergence of our Life’s necessary dance.
